Counting My Blessings

Blessings Abound: Why Wait until Thanksgiving to Count Them?

On the whole, my life so far has been incredibly blessed. Sure, the proverbial bump in the road has appeared occasionally, but the blessings outweigh the challenges. One of the Five Principles of Reiki, loosely translated says to count your many blessings, so here I go.

1. I am thankful for my very life, as well as the chance to make it a healthy, satisfying one. I am thankful that I reversed my pre-diabetes status and to have the luxury of a second chance at becoming healthier.

2. I count my loved ones, those with blood ties and otherwise–family and friends–among my most precious of blessings: both the category of loved ones who “get” me and those who don’t know what to make of me. All of my loved ones have taught me much about life and have shown unconditional love, for which I am most thankful.

3. I am thankful for my dog Emma, a beagle who rescued me from a very dark place a few years ago, even while I rescued her and provided a safe, loving home. I count the special bond Emma and I have as one of my most treasured blessings.

4. I am thankful for my coworkers, many of whom also count as dear friends. My colleagues have provided much humor, inspiration, and practical advice over the years; I never fail to learn from them.

5. I am thankful for Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors society. Never did I dream that serving as an advisor would open so many opportunities, such as participating in the Faculty Scholar Program (2012) and of connecting with so many fascinating people.

6. I am thankful for my relationship with Deity, a bond that grows stronger with each day.

7. I count as a blessing the opportunity to spread blessings to others, enriching other lives as well as my own.

8. I am thankful for and bless the earth, our home.
